Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory Excursion

Junee

On Thursday 28th November Year 12 Food Technology and MCC1 travelled to Junee to visit the Licorice and Chocolate Factory. We travelled in Mrs Southwell’s and Miss Kylie’s car. The car trip was fun but very noisy. Renee made the Year 12 students listen to Justin Bieber and Chester kept asking “Are we there yet?”

At the factory we got to make our own giant chocolate freckle. We had to wear hair nets and wash our hands before we started. While they were setting we watched a video and listened to the tour guide tell the story about how the factory started from an old flour mill. The lady explained how all the different machinery worked. Everyone got to try samples of different products. Annabelle definitely didn’t like the new product that contained Inca berries.

All the equipment is behind glass windows so no contamination happens from the visitors. The final machine used for the licorice before it is packed was a metal detector. Any licorice with metal in it is removed for safety. We also saw a giant machine that coated thousands of almonds at a time.

We used an old part of the original factory to play vertical bowls. It used to be used for transporting flour bags. There were 3 pins and a ball made from dried licorice. There was a choice of going high or low to knock over all 3 pins. Renee won the high competition and Blake and Tiarna won the low competition.

Everyone spent time in the gift shop buying sweet treats for themselves and their family. On the way home, we stopped for food at McDonalds, KFC & Subway.

Thank you, Mrs Southwell, Mrs Kemp and Miss Kylie, for organising a fun day out. The Year 12’s learnt about the food production process and could see first hand what they had been studying in class. MCC1 had the chance to practice their food preparation, social and money handling skills in real life situations. We all learnt how much we love chocolate!!!
