Impact of Partial Absences

Impact of partial absences

Minutes Off = Days Lost

Yass High School begins at 9am and concludes at 3:20pm. Having your child at school on time supports them to start the day settled and ensure they hear vital instructions or messages relating to the school day, subject information, class changes and whole school events. It also helps young people to learn the importance of punctuality and routine and gives them time to greet their friends before the school day commences.

Patterns of lateness have a serious impact on your child’s education. When your child misses 5 minutes a day, they miss 3 days a year. Missing roll call (20 minutes) one day per week accounts for 12 days (2 ½ school weeks) over the year.

Following an absence from school you must ensure that you provide the school with a verbal or written explanation within 7 days. As per the Department of Education guidelines, unjustifiable explanations include sleeping in, missing the bus, waiting for a parent or sibling, shopping, etc. Unsatisfactory reasons are required to be marked as unjustified on the school attendance register.

Arriving late disrupts the continuity of teaching and learning in a classroom.
