Parent Update Advice - Yass High School

Food Technology Students

Dear Parents/Carers,

Term 3 has started smoothly as we continue to learn at Yass High School. Unfortunately, we have not been able to celebrate many important events such as NAIDOC Week, Celebration Assemblies, Science Week (with a planned Science Fair) and Subject selection evenings as we would usually do.

The Department of Education has released an update to the guidelines for schools following the recent outbreaks in COVID-19 cases in Victoria and parts of NSW. Whilst schools continue to be safe places that adhere to AHPPC and NSW Health Advice, there have been some changes to our operations.

Points to note are:

1.    In accordance with advice from NSW Health, parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms. Schools will make arrangements for students who present as unwell or have flu-like symptoms to be sent home.

2.    NSW Health have requested that schools encourage anyone who is unwell or has even mild flu-like symptoms, to arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

3.    Students and staff with flu like symptoms will need to provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result before being permitted to return to school.

4.    Students will stay within their relevant cohort group (i.e. class, year group, or stage) for all learning activities within their school

5.    Inter-school activities must remain within the local community or zone.

6.    Only providers that are essential to the delivery of curriculum can continue to provide services and programs until further notice.

7.    Parents/carers and other non-essential visitors are not allowed on the school site.

8.    All group singing (choirs), as well as the use of wind instruments in group settings, are not permitted.

9.    School formals, dances, graduation or other social events are not permitted. Schools may hold a Year 12 assembly at school without parents to recognise the completion of school. Schools may consider delaying events until later in the year.

We will be having conversations with our Year 12 students around their graduation and formal after their trial HSC exams finish at the end of this week. I will provide all families of Year 12 students with a letter outlining the graduation options by the end of this week for your ideas on celebrating this important milestone for our graduating class of 2020.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding during a year of rapid change and upheaval.

Your sincerely,

Linda Langton
